Moray College Degree Show 2016

Finally, my work for the 2016 Moray College Degree Show is finished and hung! One of the paintings has been selected for the Society of Scottish Artists exhibition at the RSA in November 2016.

The show also includes a portfolio of smaller scale ink paintings.

These paintings are part of my Dark Island project, a reflection on a year of ill health (and fear of ill health) and how this was emotionally projected onto the landscape tropes of Uist.

The paintings make use of biological, botanical, geological and radiological imagery. The media used makes reference to traditional Chinese landscape painting (ink, hanging scrolls, perspective).

The exhibition is open in Elgin from 13-18 June 2016

Student Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year 2012

Exciting news! I’ve just won the competition to become the Student Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year 2012. I didn’t have far to look for the photos as they were all taken from my garden (though at different times of the year!). They show they machair land of North Uist: a strip of flat, fertile, sand-blown crofting land which runs along the west coast of the island, with long views down to the sand dunes on the horizon.  The snow picture was of a particularly bad winter: the snow was being whipped up by the wind to form a huge cloud which reminded me of the photos of Texas dust –bowl storms of the 1930s. I could only submit 3 photos, so the most colourful, fourth season is still missing from the sequence: the Summer when the machair is covered in white and yellow flowers.

The complete set of photos are here
